Witch trials

As shown above, the Salem Witch Trials were a series of investigations and persecutions that took place during the 1690s. Many accused women were accused of being witches and many other suspects were imprisoned in Salem Village near Massachusetts Bay. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft, and 20 of those people were executed, most by hanging or torture. Many individuals who were accused of being witches refused to practice witchcraft and so they were eventually found guilty at trial and would later be executed, but those who admitted they were witches weren't executed but in the end, they would be killed by the people. To add on, there was a widespread of panic across Salem and many feared that the devil was behind all of these unexplainable events that occurred.

Puritans/Pilgrims

This image shows the Pilgrims, a group of English who sought to break away from the Church of England due to its corruption and retained practices from Roman Catholicism. They believed in a simpler form of worship and aimed to establish their congregations, which was illegal in England during the early 1600s. Many fled to the Netherlands but were later rejected so they all fled to the New World where they later landed in North America which is in present-day Massachusetts. They are also called the Puritans taking the name "pure" because they wanted to make Christianity pure again.

Witch hunts refer to the systematic search for individuals accused of witchcraft, often leading to trials and executions. These hunts have occurred throughout history in various cultures, with notable periods in Europe and Colonial America. The witch hunts in Europe peaked between the 15th and 18th centuries, during this time, an estimated 35,000 to 60,000 people were executed for witchcraft. In Colonial America, particularly during the Salem witch trials through 1692-1693, a series of investigations led to the execution of 19 individuals and the imprisonment of many others based on accusations. Witchcraft beliefs are found across cultures and serve as a means to explain misfortunes such as illness or death.

William Bradford

The man shown above is William Bradford in search of religious freedom and better economic opportunities, Bradford joined a group that migrated to Holland in 1609. After several years in Holland, he helped organize an expedition to the New World. In 1620, he was one of the passengers aboard the Mayflower, where he contributed to drafting the Mayflower Compact, a document for self-governance in Plymouth Colony. In America, Bradford faced numerous hardships, including severe illness and personal tragedy with the drowning of his wife Dorothy shortly after their arrival. Despite these challenges, he was elected governor of Plymouth Colony shortly after John Carver’s death and served for nearly 30 years. Bradford’s leadership helped foster relationships with Native Americans and contributed to events such as the first Thanksgiving in 1623..

Tituba

Tituba is one of the famous witches involved in the Salem witch trials. She is portrayed as biracial, born in Barbados to an enslaved African woman named Abena, who was raped by an English sailor. After witnessing her mother’s execution for defending herself against sexual assault, Tituba is taken from the plantation where she grew up. She is adopted by a spiritual healer named Mama Yaya, who teaches her about herbal healing and spiritual practices. She was accused of witchcraft and imprisoned.
