In Emily Bronte's novel, Wuthering Heights, a consistent struggle faced by many characters is the lack of an upright parental figure. In particular, Cathy Linton's loss of her mother in childbirth contributes greatly to the novel's theme that longing and haunting from loss can bring about both grief and motivation. This impacts her greatly, despite how some gaps have been filled by motherly characteristics she learns from other women in her life, particularly Nelly Dean.
