The VNS (VirtNet Security) ask Michael and his friends Bryson and Sarah to help them find a notorious gamer/hacker named Kaine. As they talk it over Kaine grabs them and threatens to kill them if they do not give up trying to find him. They decide to not help VNS after Kaine's threat. VNS takes their VirtNet access away until they help decide to help the VNS again. Then they talk to a tangent (computer generated person) who seems to know everything. They learn they must follow the path to get to Kaine but it will be very difficult. They go through several difficult situations to locate the beginning of the path. Once on the path the real trouble and dangers begin. At the end of the story when he realizes he is the first subject to implement the Mortality Doctrine he is angry with Kaine.
