I agree with Athens' way of governing, this is because I believe that it is better to get public opinion rather than to get the opinions of just a few people in power. Along with this, I think that working your people to submission and loyalty through punishment and intense fitness is a cruel thing to do and will possibly cause the citizens to resent the individuals in power rather than respect them.

I really think it depends, though I 'm leaning towards the Athens side. While Sparta controlled their people well enough for them to win the Peloponnesian War and be strong, Athens advanced society by giving a form of government that eventually would be used today more widespread than Sparta's. Also, even though Sparta technically won the war, Athens only surrendered so they didn't get fully massacred. Their ideas then spread throughout all of Greece, so really Athens won the war in the long run.

I believe that Athens' democratic government, along with its philosophy and arts, allowed it to govern more effectively. Athens thrived as a society by being creative and expressing thought and the value of beauty through philosophy, the arts, literature, and architecture. Athens' democratic government also helped them thrive by allowing society to take part in the government and express their new, progressive ideas (inspired by their new art/philosophical ideas). Overall, democracy and creativity helped Athens become a successful and intelligent society.

I think Athens' values were more effective because their method involved a great amount of encouragement to their people. This allowed them to feel more comfortable and create a more orderly society because everyone was okay with the way it ran, meaning that they were more willing to be involved. The active participation of the government propelled people to invest in society and put their best efforts forward. -Ella Fisher

I think that Athens' democratic system of government was more effective and more influential on governments today. I believe allowing everyone to have a say and feel like they are contributing. People who feel like their ideas are valued will have more respect for those in charge. If someone is telling you what to believe, then you are more likely to go against it. Today, our government is democratic and a lot more effective than other governments. Athens' government had a lasting effect on our government and many more.
