2. My parents don’t want me to follow their footsteps because they want me to follow my dreams and branch out. My dad owns his own business called Charlie Rose Baseball and I want to be a doctor. I actually am going to branch out and be a pediatrician and help others. Hickam, Jr, Sonny feel’s that he has a stronger relationship with his mom verses his dad and older brother. Homer Hickam Sr, who is Sonny’s dad definitely favors his other son, Jim because he plays football. Homer Hickam Sr, doesn’t connect with Sonny because he is a nerd and not the ideal child. Sonny and Jim never get along since they are so different and they get into lots of fights. Sonny still loves his family; However, he wishes that his dad would treat him like he does with Jim. Sonny is asking his mom how his dad feels by proclaiming, “Why doesn’t Dad like me?”... “I knew Dad thought about Jim all the time, was telling people what a great football player my brother was” (Hickam 43). It is obvious that Sonny can tell that he is not loved the same by his dad like he does to Jim. Sonny shows his emotions in these quotes by telling his mom that why does his dad view him so differently. Sonny is so sad that he doesn’t have a good relationship with dad and only wants answers.On the other hand, Sonny loves his mom, Elise, since she loves her children both equally. Whenever, Sonny needs a talk or has done something bad he will go and meet with his mom. When the Rocket blew up the Elsie wanted to come up with a plan to make sure it would be more safe for next time. So she published, “ I want to figure out how he can launch his rockets without everybody getting upset about it...Because there’s some people in this town who think he and the other boys are trying to do a good thing” (102). Mom is being very loving towards Sonny by defending him to Homer Hickam Sr, by giving an idea towards him building his rockets and preventing any more dangerous actions. She is very close to Sonny and makes sure he is alright and is not feeling hurt by what his dad says to him. The fact that she is making the boys compromise towards Sonny still making the Rockets is amazing because the town thinks that this can change the overall atmosphere and how people act.
