Two opposing enemies are conflicted over a piece of land and resolve the predicament through violence; the hatred towards each other was brewing as the duel commenced. Although their intentions to shoot each other down was constrained by Nature's forces. "And before the moment of hesitation had given way to action, a deed of Nature’s own violence overwhelmed them both. A fierce shriek of the storm had been answered by a splitting crash over their heads, and ere they could leap aside a mass of falling beech tree had thundered down on them."

The force of the beech tree's downfall quite literally stopped Ulrich from his overall objective: killing Georg and settling the dispute completely. Due to the conditions of the pair being pinned down each one couldn't maneuver their body (their minor injuries and blood covered eyes), there is no room for compromising. Not only does this affect their well being, yet this gains a higher level of difficulty for his men and their worsening relationship. As time passes, the arguments gradually seem hostile towards each other and morale is eventually lowering in terms of survival instincts.

“No,” said Ulrich with a laugh, the idiotic chattering laugh of a man unstrung with hideous fear. “Who are they?” asked Georg quickly, straining his eyes to see what the other would gladly not have seen. “Wolves.”

This scene takes place at the end of the short story where Ulrich and Georg have been caught under a tree. The long lasting feud between the two is finally resolved during this time, as they realize that their problems of the forest land don't really matter. However, this is when they see the wolves approaching them.

It is implied that the wolves ate the two, essentially making their resolved issues pointless. The antagonist of this scene would be the wolves since they are going to kill the protagonist, Ulrich, who just made up with is enemy, Georg. Although in the beginning of the story, it seems to be Ulrich vs. Georg, they eventually fix their issues and both fall to the force of nature, and the wolves. Their supposed death is very telling of why the real antagonist of the story is the forest and animals around them.
