Mostly devotional, the book contains things like psalms and prayers, often decorated heavily with detailed artwork.

The reason for them being so valued is that they were pieces of sacred art and became somewhat collector's items--it was a way to have a large collection of art at your fingertips.

The book of hours is a Christian devotional book popular in the Middle Ages. It is the most common type of surviving medieval manuscript. Like every manuscript, each manuscript book of hours is unique in one way or another, but most contain a similar collection of texts, prayers and psalms, often with appropriate decorations, for Christian devotion.

They were very valued possessions due to the artistry of it. The bright colors and gold leaf was considered luxury items.
