Pedro is feeling empathy for the natives because of what Columbus. In the book Pedro has stated that he does not like what is happening to the natives. Columbus is using the natives curiosity to bring the to the ship and is manipulating them into giving them very rare items for very cheap things. To add on, Columbus has killed some natives as well and his greed has lead to many consequences. Further more, in the book Pedro says, " Her son has shamed her worse than any native. He is also frightened that his mother wouldn't want to know what Columbus is doing to Natives. Columbus is kidnapping the natives and keeping them captive in his ship. He thinks there is enough of temper and stress going on in his and his mother's life.  He was embarrassed to tell his mom and disclose the facts to his mom.
Columbus is going to take the Natives as slaves and make them work for him, for his entire journey.
