Unfortunately, this takes much longer than expected when it should have taken 5 years. For Wall-E's own interest he collects old valuables and while cleaning on of the things he finds is a plant. This is significant because Eve, the character that goes to earth to see if it is fit for the humans, is looking for something like that for evidence to bring back to the ship for the pilot to see so he knows they can return to earth. When eve sees the plant she takes it and shuts down for days. She does this automatically so that she can wait for the ship to come get her.
