As a new teacher it is best to start reinforcing positive behaviors from the start or at least establish who you are and your authority to the students. Don't act like a friend to the students at the beginning of the year and then authoritarian when it comes time to be serious, as this will confuse students. Students will think you are there friend someone they can talk to and then be confused when you switch up. Just stay consistent

Some teachers may misinterpret nonverbal and verbal signs from students. Especially those who do not speak English as a first language. In some cultures it is not appropriate to look elders in the eyes or even speak back to them to acknowledge there are listening. It is important for teachers to understand these differences in a classroom.
