Below are the 3 most important things I learned about creating instructional videos.
1. Student Engagement. Student engagement is absolutely necessary when one is trying to create instructional videos for the classroom. I learned that there are many elements to videos that can help keep students engaged such as keeping the video short, really no longer than 6 minutes. Many students become disengaged if a video is longer than 6 minutes (Brame,2015). Also, if the narrator of the video is speaking with enthusiasm and isn't speaking too slow, then students are usually more engaged than if the narrator is trying to speak too slowly (Brame, 2015).
2. I also learned a lot about the planning process of video creation. In the article, 6 Steps to Planning and Creating Engaging Instructional Videos, it walks the reader through the steps you would take if you are planning on creating an instructional video. I have never created an instructional video so, this article was very helpful for me. I can see how planning to create an instructional video would be overwhelming but with a guide like this for a beginner it doesn't seem so bad.   
3. Finally, I learned about the importance of Active Learning in an instructional video. Students can be disengaged as quickly as they opened up the video. So to ensure students are actively listening, there are some tools educators can use to ensure students are getting the information they need. Brame discusses the use of guided questions in an instructional video. In the past I have done this occasionally but I can see how students may not be retaining the information if there is not active listening (Brame, 2015).

The phone and desktop that I personally have can be used for instructional video creation. So what am I doing the first week of school that needs to be jazzed up a bit? The syllabus! I struggle with this every year. The kids don't love sitting through 10 or 15 minutes of me go through the syllabus with them. A fun video going through the same information in a shorter segment would be great to have! I would love to make a video overview of my World History syllabus. The purpose of this video would be to go through the overview and expectations of the World History classes I teach with the audience being my World History students. 

The content I would include in this overview video would be the course expectations, the tools needed for the course, grading scale, and the framework for our units of study.
