When I think of "accelerating brains," I can't help but wonder "to what end?" or "why?" At some point, we'll have to wrestle with the ethics of our own inventions. We can rebuild brain capacity for Alzheimer's patients but do we run the risk of allowing people to hack our minds? Interesting but daunting landscape.

As an English teacher, I am more and more preoccupied with the phenomenology surrounding this area. How will predictive choices influence our experiences? How will they perpetuate the biases of the humans who inform them (the authors)? How will they perpetuate the biases of their audience and propel us into echo chambers? How is it possible to have "choices" when they are automated, and how will this mitigate our critical thinking and concepts of free will?

For example, if I search for a pair of jeans online in one platform I have noticed that all my social media is populated with advertisements for similar/same items.

Also, why does my phone know where my home or work is without my telling it? If the phone knows who else knows?

I am not paranoid, but where is the line for privacy? I think the more automated we become the more we are necessarily moving that line.

Would we lose our individual freedoms and national sovereignty to a remaking of the world geography in the name of technology and said social advancement? The history of the world is limited in terms of empires guarding liberty and sustaining the common good. I have concerns with artificial intelligence as a basis for potential policy decision-making, with potential social engineering abuses and with potential reinforcement sanctions for dissent or disagreement.

That's why critical thinking is so important to our teachers. I think that the *engagement* part of this process is harder to achieve and we are working on that, too. The digital components of this Driver--I am almost entirely clueless about that! I have not noticed students making huge use of even social media for things like mobilizing others widely--it's more socially connected (so one person puts a "call" onto her social media and then 10 friends individually pass it along--but no one is getting 10 "likes" individually).
