The conflict of the book is to get away from Voldemort. But on the train to Hogwarts, Harry meets a girl named Luna LoveGood who sees the same bat-horses as he does,“ ‘It’s all right,’ said a dreamy voice from beside Harry as Ron vanished into the coach’s dark interior. ‘You’re not going mad or anything. I can see them too.’ ‘Can you?’ said Harry desperately, turning to Luna. He could see the bat—winged horses reflected in her wide, silvery eyes. ‘Oh yes,’ said Luna. ‘I’ve been able to see them ever since my first day here. They’ve always pulled the carriages. Don’t worry. You’re just as sane as I am’ ” (Rowling 199). This is significant because Harry and Luna both see the horses, meaning they might have some connection with each other and that connection might relate to Voldemort because most dark things like bats have some connection to Voldemort or Dark Arts. The conflict currently is to escape Voldemort, but this evidence has some contribution because the horses might be controlled by Voldemort, so the fact that both Harry and Luna are seeing these horses is not good since it means that Voldemort is near.

Harry also faces internal conflict throughout the book. He is constantly in a state of fear about whether anyone from the Death Eaters will find him, or if Voldemort himself will. When conversing with Lucius Malfoy, “Harry felt winded, as though he had just walked into something heavy” (Rowling 154). Harry feels as if he can never not think about who or what can hurt him and it seriously affects him. Especially when talking with Lucius Malfoy, who is part of the Death Eaters, he feels exceptionally nervous whether he is scheming something or not.

One of the most important characters in the book is Luna LoveGood. Upon seeing her, Harry noticed that “She had straggly, waist length, dirty—blond hair, very pale eyebrows, and protuberant eyes that gave her a permanently surprised look. Harry knew at once why Neville had chosen to pass this compartment by. the girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness. Perhaps it was the fact that she had stuck her wand behind her ear for safekeeping, or that she had chosen to wear a necklace of butter beer caps, or that she was reading a magazine upside down” (Rowling 185). This shows how Luna looks like because Rowling describe she aura and her strange appearance. This description and character plays a key role to the story because what Luna look or acts like becomes something larger in the story later on, and such a clear description hints that she is an important character.

Professor McGonagall foreshadows that if Harry messes up around Professor Umbridge, he will face great consequences later on. She asks him, “ ‘Do you really think this is about truth or lies? It’s about keeping your head down and your temper under control!’ ” (Rowling 249). It is important to notice that Professor McGonagall is hinting that if Harry continues to be rude or mess with Professor Umbridge, nothing good will come out of the situation. The fact that Umbridge is part of the Ministry of Magic means that whatever happens in Hogwarts, she will inform the Ministry. Not only that, but Harry is also more sustainable to suspension or more punishment because of how strict Umbridge is, or maybe something worse will happen in the future that might involve the ministry and Harry’s ‘insane’ ideas about Voldemort coming back.

Umbridge makes Harry use the quill that scratches anything he writes on a piece of paper on to his hand for telling lies about the Ministry of Magic. While doing this, “He let out a gasp of pain…And again and again the words were cut into the back of his hand, healed, and then reappeared the next time he set the quill to parchment” (Rowling 267). From this information we can infer that Professor Umbridge might be spying on the Hogwarts students and is telling the Ministry about everything that is happening. One can also infer that Umbridge is determined to discover Harry’s weaknesses because she wants to find out everything she possibly can about Harry and Hogwarts.
