Sunny Lancaster is a winner in the 1600 meter. He doesn't actually like track, he actually likes dance. Sunny wants to quit his team. However he loves them so much that he can't quit, so when he learns to let go of what he's been holding onto on the inside he makes what he thinks is a good decision by quitting. Then he realizes that it might not have been the best decision and starts regretting it. Finally he finds out that his mother is pregnant.

Sunny writes in his diary because he wants to talk to someone about not wanting to do track. However he can't tell people whats going on because he doesn't want to quit his team.

Sunny doesn't want to tell anyone that he likes dance and that he doesn't want to do track. Just like many kids in the world don't tell other people about what they really enjoy. Also other people might not want to quit because they don't know how their friends will react to that.

Sunny faces some hard times while being on the track team. He isn't that type of kid, the type of kid to do track. That's not what he's into, he's into dance. If he quits his team to do dance, he's doesn't know how his friends, family, coaches, and classmates will think of him. He faces many hardships but overcomes what he's been holding on to by quitting. However he is afraid of being the odd one out.

Sunny Lancaster learns that its okay to stand out in a crowd. He also learns to just do what he loves and to stop holding on to things on the inside. He couldn't keep it a secret anymore and tells everyone that he is quitting.

Sunny is having a battle within himself. He tells himself everything is going to be fine when it's not working out when he says that. He is fighting himself on whether to tell people or not. For the longest time he doesn't tell anyone but at the end he tells everyone.

Sunny is a very introverted person in the beginning of the book. He starts warming up to people in the middle. By the end of the book he is very social.

Sunny scratches out words sometimes. In his diary near the end of the book after he quit he puts scratch marks when he writes about how he runs and changes it to how he used to run. He doesn't run anymore so he scratches out the words.
