Mr. Spencer

"He wasn't even listening. He hardly ever listened to you when you said something. 'I flunked you in history because you knew absolutely nothing.' 'I know that, sir. Boy, I know it. You couldn't help it.' 'Absolutely nothing," he said over again. That's something that drives me crazy. When people say something twice that way, after you admit it the first time. Then he said it three times'" (6).
This quote reveals how Mr. Spencer spends a lot of time thinking about himself and is not very aware of his surroundings. He knows that Holden flunked out of the school, but he is curious to know why. This shows how he actually cares about his students and did not want to fail Holden, but was forced to due to Holden's lack of effort.
This quote comes early in the novel and reveals that Holden is very critical of everything and has a lot of pet peeves that bother him. He is a very negative person, but is also very respectful when he is talking to Mr. Spencer, showing how his thoughts often differ from his actions.

"Besides that, he had a lot of pimples. Not just on his forehead or his chin, like most guys, but all over his whole face. And not only that, he had a terrible personality. He was also sort of a nasty guy. I wasn't too crazy about him, to tell you the truth" (11).
This quote is a good representation of Ackley because it shows how little he cares about his appearance. He is also not very self aware because most of the people at the school do not like him, but he continues to try to bother them. He does not seem to care about the way he looked or acted.
Even though, Holden states multiple times that he does not like Ackley, he feels bad for him and even invites him to hang out with him. This reveals that Holden is a caring person and wants to make sure people are included, even when he does not necessarily like the person.

"'God damn it.' He was sore as hell. He was really furious. 'You always do everything backasswards.' He looked at me. 'No wonder you're flunking the hell out of here,' he said. 'You don't do one damn thing the way you're supposed to. I mean it. Not one damn thing'" (22).
This quote reveals how ungracious Stradlater is. After Holden does his English assignment for him, he lashes out because it was not about the right subject rather than being grateful that Holden tried to help him in his class.
This reveals how emotionally messed up Holden is because of Allie's death. Stradlater is the opposite of Holden because he is superficial and only cares about his looks. They clash, and Holden dislikes Stradlater because he reminds Holden of everything he hates.

"You should see her. You never saw a little kid so pretty and smart in your whole life. She's really smart. I mean she's had all A's ever since she started school. As a matter of fact, I'm the only dumb one in the family" (36).
Those quote describes Holden's sister and it shows how highly he thinks of her. Holden does not have a lot of people he connects with, but he clearly cares about his sister.
Holden's relationship with Phoebe seems to remind him about his relationship with Allie. Phoebe seems to understand Holden and he tries to be a better person for her.

"'She's a dancer,' I said. 'Ballet and all. She used to practice about two hours every day, right in the middle of the hottest weather and all. She was worried that it might make her legs lousy--all thick and all. I used to play checkers with her all the time'" (17).
Holden has not actually talked to Jane in a long time, but it is clear that he cares for her. He reminisces about their times together and she seems to be kind and real. Jane seems like the perfect person for Holden.
Jane was there for Holden when he was going through a tough time, and he even showed her Allie's baseball glove. Holden does not want to embarrass himself in front of Jane and is too nervous to see or talk to her again because he cares about what she thinks.

"He's got a lot of dough, now. He didn't use to. He used to be just a regular writer, when he was home. He wrote this terrific book of short stories, The Secret Goldfish, in case you never heard of him. The best one in it was 'The Secret Goldfish.' It was about this little kid that wouldn't let anybody look at his goldfish because he'd bought it with his own money. It killed me. Now he's out in Hollywood, D.B., being a prostitute. If there's one thing I hate, it's the movies. Don't even mention them to me" (1).
This quote shows how D.B. made it big in Hollywood and how Holden despises him for that. He misses who D.B. used to be and how he used to write.
This shows how Holden still loves his brother, but hates how he writes movies now instead of what he used to write about. It seems that Holden and his brother are close, but also shows from the very beginning that Holden hates fake and phony things.
