The Theme "Destructive Silence Causes Bad Things to Happen" is Present in the Lottery

You see throughout the story that "destructive silence causes bad things to happen" because the townsfolk almost refuse to acknowledge that the Lottery is a bad thing unless it happens to them. Evidence in the story states, "Tessie Hutchinson shouted to Mr. Summers 'You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair.' 'Be a good sport, Tessie.' Mrs. Delacroix called, and Mrs. Graves said, 'All of us took the same chance." This tells us that since Tessie Hutchinson's family was chosen, she was concerned that she would be chosen while everyone else was telling her that they all had the same chance. The people around her were silent because they were not chosen, if they had been, they would have spoken out.

You see throughout the story that "blindly following tradition without understanding" is a theme in the Lottery. The townsfolk follow the thought of the lottery without even second guessing it. They accepted the fact that they had to kill someone every year to get good crops. Evidence in the story states, "Old Man Warner snorted. 'Pack of crazy fools,' he said. 'Listening to the young folks, nothing's good enough for them. Next thing you know, they'll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work any more, live that way for a while..." They believe that if they do a sacrificial ritual, they will receive good crops for doing the June lottery. No one decided to question the logic of the entirety of the lottery and how... mythical it sounded for a person to participate in the lottery and get good crops. If people around Tessie had acknowledged that the lottery was bad, much like she had, the lottery would not have continued on the next year and possibly after that.

The Theme "Blindly Following Tradition Without Understanding" is Present in the Hunger Games

You can see that in the Hunger Games, people follow the tradition of the reaping without question. They all participate in it every year once they are of age. None of the people in the town question the tradition that was ordered by the Capital for all of them, each of the districts. They blindly stand in a place inside of there town, waiting to get reaped for the next Hunger Games. The people who get reaped have to participate in the Hunger Games where they will be put into a "testing chamber" of sorts and be forced to kill all of the people around them until there is only one person left; the victor. The people of each of the districts watch this from their television in their homes, not standing up to the Capital because they believe that this is something that is right.

You see throughout the Hunger Games, people are silent during the reaping. Each of the districts have to participate in the reaping, no one gets a choice to not do it. Only a few people have had the guts to stand up and volunteer to be tribute. No one wants to speak up from the silence and say anything. They want to stay silent so nothing happens to them and they watch the things that happen to other people. Since they are silent in the whole matter, the Hunger Games continues on until someone speaks up against the Capital.
