An assessment exercise can be formative or summative depending on how we use the data. But in essence , FA needs to answer the question of where the pupil's learning is now, how do I as a teacher close the gap and how should we move on?

Formative Assessment is suitable for all subjects. I used FA to check on pupils' understanding and level of competence before moving to the next phase of the lesson.

Assessment without the use of the data to check and reflect is of no purpose. Assessment can be both formative and/or summative. Formative assessment allows the teachers to have an understanding of the student's learning and is able to identify what the teacher can do to stretch or correct the misconceptions.
