In 1592 Japan's Hideyoshi regime invaded Chosŏn Korea. Later, Ming China sent an army to Korea to repel the Japanese invaders and, as a result, the war evolved into a major international conflict. Hideyoshi targeted Korea because he thought his military forces would easily subjugate it; and Hideyoshi envisioned that such an easy military campaign would help him consolidate his fledgling regime poised to control a complex web of local power blocs in Japan. The war ended in 1598 as the Japanese troops retreated empty-handed back to their country and the war ended in a stalemate.

The Mongol invasions of Japan took place in 1274 and 1281 CE when Kublai Khan sent two huge fleets from Korea and China. The Mongol Invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281 devastated Japanese resources and power in the region, nearly destroying the samurai culture and Empire of Japan entirely before a typhoon miraculously spared their last stronghold. It was November 5th, 1274 when the Mongol invasion of Japan began with an attack on Tsushima/Iki. Villagers spotted the fleet approaching from the western horizon. Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, turned his ambitions east. Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun, was to be his next target. The Khan probably wanted to re-establish his Mongol heritage or maybe wanted to rekindle Chinese trade relations with Japan. On 15 August, a great typhoon, known in Japanese as kamikaze, struck the fleet at anchor from the west and devastated it. Sensing the oncoming typhoon, Korean and south Chinese mariners retreated and unsuccessfully docked in Imari Bay, where they were destroyed by the storm.
