When Simon finds out about an online confession of a classmate using the Name “Blue”. Simon starts writing with him using the Name “Jacques” and they become closer. Martin discovers the E-Mail Simon has been writing and blackmails him into helping to get Martin and his Friend Abby together. Martin threatens to make his E-Mails public to the school otherwise. This leads to Simon manipulating his friends’ love lives and ending in a conflict. Martin gets rejected by Abby anyways and gets publicly ridiculed. To let out his frustration he outs Simon to distract from the gossip about himself. Simon successfully comes out to his accepting family. After the holidays he talks to his friends for the first time and they are upset, that Simon manipulated them and break off contact. After apologizing Simon makes amends with his friends and invites Blue to meet him at the carnival. He finds out that Bram is Blue after all and they ride the Ferris wheel together while everyone cheers for them.

Nick and Abby were mad at Simon because he manipulated them for Martin. Simon did not do this willingly, he was blackmailed and at the risk of his identity being made public to the school. If you consider what was at stake here for Simon he didn’t have a choice. There is no such thing as having a ‘right’ to know a friend’s identity before someone else. The way that Simon acted towards Ethan and how he was looking down on him because he was showing his sexuality in a more feminine way. He did not apologize for this and because of that, this kind of behaviour was also normalized for the viewer. There is no “better” way to be or act gay.

It doesn’t confront straight audiences to confront their own biases and has the “We are all the same” message and is very safe and easy to watch. On the second axis it is focused because Simon is the main character and the story revolves around him.

Simon was a really interesting character and his journey through the story was as well. I enjoyed that it was a happy ending. 
It does not go into the deeper issues of being a queer teen and shows an idealized version of that life. For me, it is a feel-good movie that doesn’t show reality but is entertaining. There are also some cliché unrealistic teen movies with straight couples so why not for gay couples too? There are a lot more films showing the harsh reality of being queer and sometimes this kind of film can be an escape from reality for some people.
