The University of Strathclyde are offering 40 young people across North Lanarkshire Council secondary schools the opportunity to spend 2 days on-campus at the university to attend Science @ Strathclyde.

Science @ Strathclyde will introduce young people to the study of science at University. They will visit each of the 5 Departments in the Faculty of Science – Computer & Information Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Pure & Applied Chemistry and Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences - where they will take part in fun, interactive sessions that demonstrate how science is used in the real-world.

Science @ Strathclyde will take place in May 2026 (dates tbc) and is suitable for S1 pupils (due to transition to S2).

Informaiton will be shared with schools through DYW PT's and Education and Families Bulletin in March 2026

The Pneumonitor team has developed a rugged, in-pen microclimate monitor to help prevent calf pneumonia by providing reliable, real-time data from inside calf pens. Traditional methods lacked accuracy without measuring actual pen conditions. Their solution is a battery-powered sensor that withstands farm environments, sends live data via mobile networks, and requires no extra setup. Successfully tested on farms, it provides vets with accurate information directly from the calf's environment. Funded by Digital Dairy Chain Innovation Voucher, the project is now being deployed to reduce disease. An upcoming feature will also retrofit fans and heaters for better efficiency.

A 2-day residential course based at SSERC HQ to support probationer teachers in Science to deliver safe, high quality, hands-on practical STEM learning in the classroom/lab.  There will be coverage across a range of science curriculum organisers allowing delegates to develop their skills in and out of their subject specialism. Closing Date for Applications: 14th November 2025.

This programme offers an excellent way of keeping up to date with developments in your subject area.  The residential aspect of the course offers a great networking and peer engagement aspect for delegates, creating opportunities to build new working relationships with other probationer teachers across the range of schools and local authorities in Scotland. The course is aligned to the GTCS Standards for Full Registration and the National Model for Professional Learning.  The course content explores practical activities to support Education Scotland’s Science Benchmarks.

Young WEIR-WISE: Discovering Engineering with S2 Girls

The Faculty of Engineering, in partnership with the Weir Group, are delighted to offer the Young WEIR-WISE: Discovering Engineering with S2 Girls programme. Open to all S2 girls in Scotland, there are 300 places available on the programme which runs in January each year and there are online and in-person offerings for pupils to choose from. The in-person offering sees pupils attend the University for two days in January to participate in practical, group activities. We run this twice, with 100 pupils attending each two-day session. A further 100 places are available on the online programme which also runs in January for one day and sees pupils join information sessions and take part in online activities remotely over the course of the day. During both offerings, participants will hear from staff at the University and colleagues from the Weir Group who will provide insight into studying and working in the field of engineering.

Let’s Grow is a free, supportive program designed for young people aged 16 to 24 who are looking to build confidence, develop life skills, and connect with others in a relaxed and engaging environment.

Whether they’re looking to take their first steps into volunteering, education, or employment—or simply want to grow in confidence—this course offers a welcoming space to explore their potential. The week finishes with group presentations and each candidate earns a Silver Industrial Cadet Award.

Each workshop session has an hour allocated , 45 minutes of delivery and workshopping with 15 minutes reflection to hold space for young people to understand and share what they have learned with peers.

Sustainability - organisational sustainability, what the business does in this area. 

 Employability - Threading insight to early careers, how sustainability is link to careers within each organisation, widening students' horizons about potential future pathways.

Visibility - Providing visibility to YP on the world of work, skills required in that area, allowing them space to consider their potential skills gap and how they can become visible to future employers, further education and opportunities.

What are the Programmes?

The Young Enterprise Company Programme is our most immersive, fully insured, enterprise experience which runs over an academic year for S5 and S6 students. Young people learn by doing as they set up a real business, assign leadership roles, brainstorm product and service ideas and launch onto the market. Students have access to an optional SCQF Level 6 Qualification worth 30 SCQF Points (21 UCAS points) in partnership with Glasgow Kelvin College and a reflective exam provided by Strathclyde Business School!

The Team Programme runs in the same format but has been designed for students over the age of 15 who have mild to moderate additional support needs. We focus on ensuring students develop transferable enterprise skills that they can build on through their next phase after high school. Students are encouraged to complete the optional SCQF Level 3 qualification worth 15 SCQF points as part of the programme. These programmes can be run as an extracurricular group afterschool or at lunchtimes, as an option on the school timetable or could run as short-term as 12-weeks, so could make up a project for a semester. We link the programmes with the real world of work by aiming to match each Company and Team with a local Business Mentor.
