Game Rules:

The game is played in a series of turns, the Game Master will announce a new global event at the beginning of each turn. You will roll dice to see how this event will affect your country.

Each Student must take one of the following actions to try and survive, each turn. If you are low on money, you do not have to take an action. You must record your decisions and new values on the Country Profile Sheet.

Action One: Close Borders

Cost: $50

Effect: Your country is immune to new infection this turn. This is a good way to stay healthy but comes with a cost.

Risk: You do not know what is happening outside your country

Action Two: Research Cure

Cost: $150

Effect: This turn, your country's infection rate drops by 5%. This is a good way to combat the disease, but it is expensive.

Risks: You don't know if the research will be successful, and the cost might be too high

If your population or your resources hits 0, your country is Dead.

The longer you stay alive the closer you get to winning.

An Island has been quarantined by the World Health Organization due to an outbreak of a nasty virus. You are tasked with delivering medical goods, foods, and "chocolate" to the island inhabitants.

Criteria and Constraints:

1. You can't touch the water or the island. It will contaminate any device immediately. You touch, You die.

2. The medicine is very rare and expensive, so accuracy is imperative.

3. The people of the island need their supples delivered quickly.

4. You will have 80 minutes to complete your prototype.

The video we are about to watch gives us a look into the engineers and scientist behind protecting our planet from other objects in space.

Shock Absorption and Landing

The main goal of the egg drop challenge is to protect a fragile object (the egg) from a sudden impact. This is exactly what engineers have to do when designing a lander for a planet or moon. A spacecraft landing on a planet can reach incredible speeds, so a system is needed to absorb the force of the landing and keep the sensitive instruments and rovers inside safe.

• Earth Analogy: You design a container to protect the egg. You might use foam, bubble wrap, or a parachute to slow it down.

• Space Analogy: Engineers design spacecraft with shock-absorbing legs, inflatable airbags, or even retro rockets to slow their descent and cushion the final impact.

Gravity, Mass, and Force

The egg drop challenge is a hands-on way to explore key physics concepts that are crucial in space travel.

• Gravity: The egg's acceleration towards the ground is caused by gravity, a force that affects everything in the universe. Understanding this force is essential for plotting a spacecraft's trajectory.

• Mass and Force: The heavier your egg and its container, the more force they will hit the ground with. Engineers have to balance the need for a strong, protective container with the need to keep the spacecraft light enough to be launched into space.

Problem: Get your payload safely to the surface! Design and build an egg lander that protects a raw egg that’s dropped from the second story of the NAC.

Criteria and Constraints:

1. You can only use materials given to you, and you may not hot glue the egg in any way

2. The egg must be in the center of your creation

3. Your Egg should make it to the surface without any cracks.

4. You have today and Thursday to create your lander (we test on Friday)

After 40 minutes, we will need to place the marshmallows outside to cook in the sun. This will hopefully give them time to get a little melted so they are enjoyable.

8:00-12:00 you and your house will create a l ip sync to a Christmas song and perform in front of judges. Then at 12 there will be a State clap out for the athletes, then school will be dismissed so those that would like can go to the game.

We will be learning the basics to a Launch Pad. By the end of this presentation you will have the knowledge of all the components on the Launch Pad and what they are used for.

Let's Chat about Break, each student has 1 minute to give me 1 high and 1 low from the break.

Problem: Using the scientific ideas of inertia, friction, and momentum, to create a functional and durable mini-golf course.

Criteria/Constraints:

• Hole must be challenging yet playable with three stokes

• Hole in One can not be impossible

• You must have a clearly marked hole for the golfball

• Must include one moving part or a multi-level element (like a bridge, or a ramp, or false hills)

• There must be 2 different types of materials the ball interacts with

• Can only use the materials provided to you

• Can not be longer than 8 feet

Objects at rest stay at rest and objects in motion stay in motion at a constant speed and direction unless an external force acts on them.

Why is this important to Your Creation:

• The Ball needs to get from the start to the finish some how

• Will you include obstacles that will challenge the direction and speed of the golf ball

• What are you going to need to create in order to move the ball from its starting position to the hole?

I will have pre-chosen themes on my wheel of death, collectively we will go through them and choose one main theme for our class course. I will spin and take votes on the different themes, so everyone gets a say

Why Is it important to your creation?

• You will be adding different materials to your putt-putt course. You need to be mindful of the friction that will happen between the golf ball and the building materials.

Examples: Cardboard vs. Plastic Golfball, Decorative Felt vs. Plastic Golfball, and Wood vs. Plastic Golfball

Mass in Motion. Objects have mass, so if an object is moving, then it has momentum.

Why is this important to the Project?

• Once hit with the golf club, the golf ball has momentum. Depending on the force in which it is hit, it will either have higher momentum or lower. This will be beneficial when trying to get a good score on each hole
