Travel motivators - The Roman civilization and renaissance period are two of the best preserved examples of ancient cultures. This trip will bring out the historian in you through both urban an rural settings. The Tuscany region which you will travel through is one of the most famous landscapes in all the world.
Travel barriers - Although most major urban centres in Italy have good accessibility, you may find the walking in ancient areas restricts mobility due to cobblestones and many stairs. 
Traveling with family can be difficult as most hotel rooms are small spaces and usually equipped with twin beds.
Cost is the greatest barrier for most. In North America, it usually is seen as a luxury or a once in a lifetime trip to go to Italy.

- Within Rome is Vatican City. Which is in itself, is its own country. Roman Catholicism is one of the worlds largest religions. Pilgrimage makes the Vatican a travel destination in itself for many.
- Both Rome and Florence are filled with amazing examples of art and architecture, by famed artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, and many more.

After settling in, have a late lunch, Italian style at Pane e Salame. This will help you get on track as European times of business operations differ from North American standards. Summer hours in Rome for shopping are 9am-1pm and
4-8pm, as the time in between is siesta. After your lunch, check out some shopping. Rome has shopping in the Piazzas, these are central squares that roads lead to. It is not on a grid system. You can grab dinner after your shopping in the Piazzas and head home after a long day.
Wednesday July 7th - Rome - Visit the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Take the subway to the Coliseo Station. As you exit the station, you will see the Colosseum straight ahead. Tickets are $27.68 CAD and include all three venues, valid for 2 days. A must see for everyone.
Thursday July 8th - Rome - Vatican City

Take a half day tour of Vatican City,  after the tour you may spend the rest of your day exploring the beauty. See St. Peters Basillica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican muesums. Tour cost: $86.21
Friday July 9th - Take a walking tour of rome! You can walk to most famous ancient sites around Rome. Some places to visit are, the Pantheon (the oldest surviving building in Europe), the Trevi Fountain (throw a coin in to ensure your return), Circus Maximus (ancient ruins), and Bocca della Verità (the mouth of truth)

Saturday July 10th - Take the high speed eurorail train to Florence. Walk or cab to your hotel choice. After settling in, spend your afternoon at the Uffizi Gallery

Walk to the Piazza della Signoria where you will see preserved statues from the renaissance period, dating back to the 15th century, have dinner in the Piazza, there are many wonderful cafes there.
Sunday July 11th - Florence
Plan today to walk to the Duomo and Giotto's Bell Tower. While in this square you will find a plaque in memory of the bonfire of the vanities,, where purists burnt anything of cultural significance. Spend your afternoon at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze where you will see Michealangelos  statue of David. Afterwards, take a walk through the fashion district and on to the Arno river, where you will find the Ponte Vecchio, Europe's oldest bridge. This renaissance bridge has many jewellery shops along it which have continued to thrive for 500 years. Make sure to take in the sunset.

Monday July 12th - Take the train back to Rome in the morning after checking out. Check back into your first hotel. For your final day, you'll see the environmental and natural side of Rome, while taking a relaxing stroll through Villa Torlonia, Nomentana Street, 70 - 00161 Rome. You can enjoy landscape views, botanical gardens, making for great pictures. You can have lunch at Streatart ,
0.3 km away for delicious pizza. Afterwards cab to Rome's Catacombs. Crypts, Bones & Catacombs: An Underground Tour of Rome, $107.31 CAD per person. This 3 hour journey will take you through ancient underground walkways, with your own tour guide in a small group setting. Taxi back to your hotel where the last thing you must do before bed, is stop for gelato. Check the The Gelateria Guide of Rome for a location near your hotel.

Why: For Trudeau to ask the Pope for an apology over the churches role in residential schools
What: The Pope and Trudeau discussed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's recommendation for an apology to the survivors and their families and how important it is to Canadians. How: The Pope agreed they would meet with Canadian officials and the bishops to discuss. 
The stakeholders involved are The Roman Catholic Church and the Indigenous peoples of Canada. 
I don't believe this will largely impact tourism in Italy, if anything the current Pope is seen as a leader in social justice issues and this is a positive move forward. The train is best if moving from city to city because of the high speed eurorail trains. a 3 day 1st class eurorail pass is 253$ CAD. This is the most efficient use of your time, the high speed train is 1.5h vs 8h by car to get from Rome to Florence. 

Public transit in Rome is 1.50 euros for 100 mins, or 24 euros for a 7 day pass. It is safe and efficient, with subway stops at most major historical attractions. 
Taxis in Rome start at 2.80 euros from 7am-10pm , except on Sunday it starts at 4 euros and on Sunday night 5.80 euros there's a 2 euros flat rate / surcharge at the terminal and another 1 euro for luggage.
