Camels are very large mammals that are naturally found in the desert. They have many adaptations and make them well suited for living in the desert. They have adaptations all over their body to make them perfect to live wild and serve their domesticated purposes. There are two species of camels: Camelus bactrianus (two humps) and Camelus dromedarius (one hump). The subspecies of bactrianus camels, wild camels, are critically endangered.

Different adaptations

Camels have many adaptations but these are the 4 I think are the most useful.

Long, doubled eyelashes with a different angle to protect from getting sand in their eyes. We can use this to design attachments to glasses to protect our eyes from rain or other debris.

Thick, leathery patches on knees to protect from getting burned from the hot sand. Many sports, like volleyball, already use knee pads to protect the players from injury or floor burns.

Wide feet to walk across sand easily. Humans can use this to create shoes for people who live on the coasts and encounter a lot of sand. Different things can be added to make them appropriate for other unstable ground types.

The humps on a camels back is used to store fat which they release water from to survive without water for up to 6 months. The camelbak brand bases their hands free drinking system off of this adaptation.

As someone who needs glasses to see, I have lots of problems. One of my biggest issues is that when I wear my glasses during the rain, they collect rain drops and impair my vision. I had an idea to solve my problem using camel eyelashes. Camel's have two rows of thick eyelashes that tilt down instead of up. This helps keep sand from getting in their eyes. They also have a third transparent eye lid that helps clear any sand in their eyes.

This model was made using Popsicle sticks, a milk jug, an old wash cloth, and is held together with hot glue. As you can see, it is one bar that connects to the earpiece of the glasses. There are two rows of lashes, one upward and one downward. There is also an absorbent strip in the middle. There are dabs of hot glue included to help keep the attachment in place.

This product, if made properly, would be very effective in light/moderate rains coming at a certain angle. The size would be customized to fit all sizes of glasses. It will simply attach to the top of your glasses, making installment easy. Then you simply leave it and let it do the work. As rain falls, it will be deflected by the lashes. The drops will either pool and run off then end, which will cause it to fall without hitting the lenses. If raindrops were to fall between the lashes, they would be absorbed by the strip between the lashes. This product would be made from recycled plastic- creating another item which would allow us to re-purpose a non-biodegradable material.
