During this rotation, I learned to apply the knowledge and skills taught in our Fundamental course while caring for patients in a long-term care facility. I performed physical assessments, attained vital signs, administered medications, assisted with ADLs, provided G-tube feedings, performed wound care and dressing changes.

Medical Surgical I
Clinical hours: 90

During this rotation, we built upon the skills learned from our previous semester and honed our clinical decision making skills. Skills performed included: IVP medication administration, subcutaneous injections, glucose monitoring, NG Tube insertion, post-par-tum care, and discontinuing IVs and Foley catheters. In addition, we improved on our therapeutic communication and critical thinking by developing detailed care plans for each patient.

Nurs: 320: The Queen's Medical Center
Labor and Delivery and Postpartum Unit
Clinical hours: 71

During the maternity-newborn rotation, I observed in the Labor and Delivery, the role of an RN during the postpartum period. I learned of fetal heart-rate monitoring and the interventions to remediate abnormal fetal heart rates. I witness the role of the OR nurse, surgical technologies, Anesthesiologist, OB doctor, and the primary nurse during a cesarean section. In the Postpartum unit, I assisted in caring for both mother and baby. The skills I performed included physical assessment of a newborn and postpartum woman, newborn cord and circumcision care, how to feed, swaddle, and change a newborn's diapers, post-operative monitoring, and providing patient education.

NURS: 360 Castle Medical Center
Psychiatric Mental Health
Clinical Hours: 60

During this clinical rotation, I had to opportunity to work with a number of client with mental illnesses. We focused on developing our therapeutic communication skills and various mental assessments. I was able to co-facilitate group activities which focused on psychosocial and psychoeducational topics. 

NURS: 360 Lab/Clinical
Medical Surgical
Clinical Hours: 210

During this clinical rotation, our clinical instructor focused on preparing us for the real life expectations as a nurse. We honed our critical thinking, time management, communication, and priority setting skills through a number of virtual simulations. I had the opportunity to learn and perform numerous nursing skills, such as medication administration (oral and IV), IV start/discontinuing, blood transfusions/transfusion reactions, chest tube insertion and care, COVID-19 disease process, prevention, treatments, documentation, and delegation of tasks.
