The Chernobyl Disaster is an event that occurred on April 26, 1986 in Chernobyl, Ukraine. It was started from a flawed reactor design and the lack of strong safety procedures. It is the worst nuclear disaster in history that required 500,000 personnel and cost billions of dollars.

The cost of the cleanup and containment costed around $68 billion dollars in the short term and $700 billion dollars in the end. The displacement of the hundreds of thousands of people in the area led to a loss of the workforce. There was also a loss of tourism to the area which further hurt the economy. The long-term costs included the healthcare for the affected people, compensation, and the halting of some energy projects to integrate newer safety systems.

The radioactive fallout spread all across Europe, contaminating much of the land and water. The land around the power plant died shortly after the first initial explosion. Tons of radioactive isotopes were found in the soil. There have also been cases of animal mutations.

The problem was addressed in many ways. Firefighters first put out the fires on the reactor roof, which would ultimately lead to some of their demise. Hundreds of thousands were evacuated over the days. A concrete sarcophagus was constructed around the reactor to contain is radiation and the soil and radioactive debris were cleaned up and properly disposed of. Next, workers decontaminated buildings and infrastructure to remove some of the surface radiation, and chemicals were sprayed to combat the radiation. The victims were treated in hospitals and were given proper aid to resume their lives. A final containment structure was put around the reactor that is said to last 100 years. The value system this best reflects is Technocentric, though Anthropocentric plays a part in this solution, Technocentric mostly did all the work in containing the radioactivity.

This event was important to environmental history because it was a disaster that no one had ever seen or imagined. The environment was very polluted and took many resources to clean up. It is the biggest nuclear disaster and the most expensive disaster ever costing $700 billion dollars. It serves as a reminder to never let anything like this happen again and to upkeep the health of the environment.

We were ignorant about our environment until crap hit the fan, then we really started to lock in after realizing how much bigger of a problem it would have been if it wasn't contained.

Being near it for a couple of seconds can lead to serious illness and even death.

Witnesses reported seeing an eerie blue light beaming out of the reactor into the sky. This was caused by Cherenkov radiation.
