1. Santa Clarita IS a modern-day Levittown

Levittowns in the 1950s featured a densely populated community and many community elements, such as sewer systems, schools, shopping centers, churches, swimming pools, paved streets, doctor offices, etc. Santa Clarita residents are able to enjoy the Westridge Mall on weekends, read the local paper "The Signal," send their children to one of the multiple public and private schools in the valley, and take advantage of all the local resources such as orthodontists, doctors, and gyms. Pictured here is one of the multiple community pools open in Santa Clarita. Specifically, a pool where I live in Westridge. This pool is used by many residents, mostly families with young children.

To what extent is the Santa Clarita Valley a modern-day Levittown?

Santa Clarita Valley exhibits more qualities of a modern-day Levittown than differences. Similarities can be seen specifically in neighbor layouts, house development patterns, and other external traits. However, internally, Santa Clarita proves to hold a slightly more diverse population than traditional Levittowns and the interior of houses has drastically transformed since the 1950s.

2. Santa Clarita IS NOT a modern-day Levittown

Synthetic materials, smoothness, bright colors, futuristic decorations, and metallic pieces characterized the interior of traditional Levittown homes. Santa Clarita is not a modern-day Levittown when looked at from the interior of the homes. Santa Clarita homes utilize warm or cool colors, instead of the bright reds and greens that covered Levittown homes, like the color of this background. Also strikingly different is the tendency of homes to display sharp lines, say now for appliances and flooring, instead of the traditional smooth edges. My kitchen pictured here is the opposite of a traditional Levittown kitchen, with its warm tones and hardwood flooring.

Another characteristic of classic Levittowns are neighbor layouts consisting of rows of houses that repeat a pattern of the same 4-6 house layouts painted in 4-6 varieties of color. Santa Clarita is a modern- day Levittown in this architectural sense, sharing the same uniformity for housing. Another similar housing characteristic Santa Clarita exhibits is the subdivision of neighborhoods with distinct names, such as Westridge, Stevenson Ranch, Valencia, Saugus, etc. In my own neighborhood, we have the 4 repeating layouts, but the differing colors makes it hard to tell.

Levittowns increased the value of property by planting trees throughout the community. Santa Clarita is definitely a modern-day Levittown in this sense, since trees can be seen alongside almost any road in the valley. These trees, and the surrounding greenery are kept looking presentable by city workers, similar to the upkeep Levittown lawns experienced. Also important to note is similarity of the aesthetically-curved roads in Levittowns, and the same sort of road like the one pictured here.

One prominent feature that makes Santa Clarita much of that of a modern-day Levittown is it's tendency to be "too congested for effective variety and too spread out for social relationships." A common problem faced by teenagers in Santa Clarita is how uneventful the city is or how there is not much to do. Many parts of the community, restaurants like the one pictured below, have been packed in since the beginning, making it harder for residents to find a better variety of places to go or stores to shop at since they have probably gone before. Santa Clarita is also very spread our, making it especially difficult for students to meet other students from outside their high school unless they can drive to other parts of town.

Levittowns greatly lacked diversity, leaving it mostly open to white American families who could afford it and closing it's doors to most black American families. In fact, Levittowns are remember by some blacks as a reminder of segregation, racism, and violence; for many angry white mobs took action to protest blacks moving in. It's fortunate that Santa Clarita does not experience any angry mobs, segregation, and today, we have slightly more diversity, separating us from the traditional Levittown. While our population is a majority white, 57% that is, we are also home to 32% mixed race, 8% Asian, 2% Black, and many other races.
