The first Olympics took place in Greece during the year of 776 - although there are ancient sports competitions dated hundreds of years before this - where it is named as the Ancient Olympics. It is not so well known that since the first Modern Olympics event, in Athens in 1896, only four times it happened to be canceled or postponed: 1916 because of the outbreak of World War I, 1940 and 1944 due to the World War II and during 2020 because of the pandemic caused by COVID 19. A sad moment for all the sports, athletes and fans as they will all have to wait until 2021 for this year's postponed event. Discus-throwing was the first element in the pentathlon, and while pentathletes were in some ways considered inferior to those athletes who excelled at a particular sport, their physical appearance was much admired.Victor statues were intended to immortalize successful athletes. Sculptors favored bronze for athletic statues, perhaps because it better represented tanned, oiled skin, but many were carved from marble. They were set on bases inscribed with a dedication to a god, the athlete’s name, father’s name, home town and contest.

From Ancient Greece to the present days, traditions from their origins are preserved and so, the Olympic Torch is one of them. In all the years of the Olympics, 100 days before the competitions start, the fire that will light the Olympic pyre is lit in a torch, in the city of Olympia, Greece, from the sunlight and it is directed to the host city of the Games. The Torch relay, which was canceled this year due to the COVID 19 outbreak, represents a Greek legend. According to this legend, Prometheus, a titan, who defended the humans, would have stolen Zeus' fire and handed it over to humanity. The fire, in this case, represents the wisdom of the gods.
