In some cases, both A and B are acceptable and they do not change the meaning. Rather, B says the same as A with a emphasis in the continuity of the action.
      "I have lived in Athens for 3 years"
     "I have been living in Athens for 3 years"

In other cases, the meaning changes. Even though it may not be clear at first sight, the subtle change has a impact on meaning.
      "They have read all their books" (Completed action)
