After completing the activity last week something that was particularly valuable to me was the one person out of about 10 that said she was not stressed at all. It really made me think about the way we perceive stress and if she was just someone who could handle stress better or if the way she chose to live her life was truly in a way that limited the amount of stress she experience. Something that didn't work well for us was the lack of open ended questions we were asking. People often gave us one word answers and in the beginning the conversations were really short, so we ended up adding another question. Something I learned that I had thought of before but I didn't truly understand the importance of was asking the person's name. Although this may sound like a really simple task, it makes the conversation more personable. I look back and realize how rude it was to not introduce ourselves beyond that we were students conducting a survey. I definitely learned from the experience and will not make the mistake again. An experience that stands out was two girls who were best friends that were excited to talk to us and offered a more input than other students who just gave us one word answers. This made it easier to fully understand who they are and how they handle stress. This allowed me to learn the importance of prompting people to elaborate in order to get the full picture because not everyone will do it on their own and be as willing to talk as these two girls were.

The activity this week was a little harder for me overall then the ones we did in class. I had a hard time approaching people when I was by myself. I also did not want to take too much of their time since two of them were doing work, so I feel like the conversations got cut shorter than they should have been. I also planned on not sticking to a script and just letting the conversation flow, but because I got nervous I ultimately retreated back to the script we had used in class instead of asking deeper questions.

Last week I really enjoyed going to the Mona Clinic and seeing what they offer now and their plan for the future. I love the idea of creating the community space outside for people to come and eat with each other while also adding green space to the area. It was also really interesting to talk to the people in the surrounding community about the clinic and the progression that occurred from when it used to be a restaurant. One man at the barber shop told us that it has drastically improved after becoming the Mona clinic. He also was telling us about the food options in the area and he was excited that new food options had just come in. However, when asked about the food options that are available he listed Royal farms and a Chinese place. Therefore, I think the additions that the Mona Clinic are making to add a community garden and serve food, will be beneficial in bringing nutritional food options to the area.

Last week we went over the interviews that we performed when we went out into the community at the Mona Center. I enjoyed looking at how the topics that people were discussing overlapped and how some people had differing perspectives, especially pertaining to the drug problem in the area and the new medical dispensary that came in. We narrowed down that the drug problem is something that we wanna look into and possible use that as a starting point for our final project.

Last week we discussed what we would like to do for our final project. The thing we decided on was having a community event space in the green area when residents from the surrounding community can come and socialize. One of the problems we are focusing on is drug use. Substance abuse is often associated with mental health issues or a lack of alternative options available to spend free time. We are hoping that this area would bring the community together and encourage social interaction. This is linked with decreases in mental health issues. The area is also a green space which has also been shown to help with mental health. We also would link to have resources available at these events like pamphlets or other resaurces in order to promote the services at the Mona center and services in the community that could help someone who may be addicting to drugs such as opioids.

Last week we made a prototype of the social venue we would like to create. We created a stage area and filled the rest of the space with tables and activities for people to socialize. After creating the space we were talking with Dr. Thomas about making the area more welcoming, so we decided to add a wooden fence around the perimeter. We would like to have our first event be a decorating event for people to come and engage with others in the community and decorate the fence. It will be interesting to see the feedback we get from people in the community today.
