Jing-Mei's mother sees America as the land of opportunity and wants Jing-Mei to be successful in life. It seems as if her mother is looking out at the different opportunities her daughter has in this country, so she is trying all of these different opportunities. She isn't just focusing on herself and trying to improve. This story focuses on a Native American kid growing up on a reserve, and going to school. Over the years he was at school, he got plenty of cruel things done to him. Each year, he was able to reflect on what has happened to him, and progress on that. He became better after every year, and began to realize, and figure out who he was. It isn't a movie that would typically come to mind when thinking about any kind of symbolism. But if you really look at it, Andy, who is played by Steve Carrel is a very lonely, kind of nerdy guy at the beginning of the movie. As he starts to hang out with new people from work, he starts to come out of his shell because of what his friends are saying and pushing him to do. I really liked how the main character, Esperanza, developed as a character. You could tell that at the beginning of the story, she wasn't happy with the life her parents could afford to give her and her siblings. She was always taught to follow the feminine stereotype from back then. As the story progressed, she matured as a character and started caring more about others and not as much just for herself. She got out of her shell when learning about her sexuality, and going out without being worried about talking to a man. In my opinion, she was the most developed character by the end of the story than in any of the other literature we read.
