Publishing is the final and most exciting part! The audience is excited to hear the writers' work and get to know the author. Writers, during this stage can add their own touch creating a personal atmosphere to the work, such as an author’s page or creative book cover.
Personal Experience: Reading one's work can be very nerve racking, however when I read my work to family and friends as audiences, their feedback is very important and crucial to my writing process.
Child Observation: Teacher hosts a classroom publishing party for the students after their writing is complete. Students design a cover for the front of their book and have a read-a-thon!

Prewriting is the getting ready to write stage and during this stage a writer chooses a topic, considers the purpose, audience, and form, and brainstorms for organizing ideas for writing.
Personal Experience: Pre-writing can be a challenge. Struggles during this stage can be having too many topics to choose from or the inability to create a topic to write about, however creating a narrow topic that derives from a larger topic of interest can be helpful.
Child Observation:
1. Students participating in an activity as a class such as baking a treat and then the students write about their experience and practice the stages of the writing process.
2. Students sit in a circle and brainstorm ideas about the topic of writing. A ball of yarn is passed around and a student begins by holding the yarn ball and sharing something he/she knows about the topic and then passes the ball of yearn creating a web of ideas.

Step 2 Drafting

Drafting derives from pre-writing. Pre-writing generates tentative ideas and activities while the drafting stage is the time to pour out these ideas on paper careless of spelling and grammar errors. The focus of this stage is to generate a rough draft and crafting leads.
Personal Experience: A few years ago I was very interested in authoring children's books and would pinpoint concentration on my audience and the purpose of my books. During this time I found myself pouring out ideas onto paper and then creating new ideas after reading the topics that I had scripted.
Child Observation: Write out the answers that the students had shared in the web, so that the students have direction in their writing and can certain aspects of the topic to write about. Students while starting their rough draft put a X on every other line to provide room for editing.

Step 3 Revising

The revising stage is for writers to review their rough draft and refine their ideas. Revising includes adding, substituting, deleting and re-organizing the work of the paper. This stage involves the reading of others such as other classmates and teachers and following editing and revising based on the critique.
Personal Experience: When I was attending my previous college, some of my classes required students to meet with tutors at the Writing Center on campus to revise papers. I thought that this was beneficial because it was helpful to have another person read my writing out loud and hear my writing come from another person.
Child Observation: Students revising their writing in a highlighting station. Students have multiple highlighters and specific colors are related to different editing topics. For example, students use the pink highlighter to highlight opening and concluding sentences in their paragraphs.

While the editing stage is tedious, it is the act of putting the piece of writing into its final form. While editing it is important to create some distance from the composition and then proofread to correct errors.
Personal Experience: Stepping away from a piece of writing is very helpful for me. Sometimes while writing I become so involved in my writing that I loose the focus of the paper or drift away from the topic. However creating some distance between my paper gives me perspective and allows me to redirect my paper and focus on the topic.
Child Observation: Students follow an editing marks sheet to edit the paper they wrote with the different marks. This allows them to learn the meaning of the marks and punctuation.
