Apollo was born to one of Zeus's lovers, Leto, on the island of Delos alongside his twin sister, Artemis. Apollo ate purely ambrosia and nectar which helped him grow into a full grown man within four days. In a rage of jealousy, Zeus's other lover, Hera, sent the Dragon, Python, to kill Leto; now a fully grown man, Apollo goes to kill Python to avenge his mother. After these events, he grew up to become the ideal greek man, "...he is harmony, reason and moderation personified, a perfect blend of physical superiority and moral virtue ... as the perfectly developed classical male nude, the kouros," (Apollo, greekmythology.com). He was adored by both women and men all over greek due to his perfect boy and the personification of the Hellenic ideal, kalokagathia.
Throughout his lifetime, he became a god of many things including: sun, light, music, poetry, healing, plagues, prophecy, and knowledge. Due to his many talents, he was loved by many but the majority of his romantic affairs resulted in death. One of his most tragic stories was with Hyancinthus, his mortal lover who he accidentally killed, "Zephyrus, the West Wind – a Hyacinthus’ admirer himself – so jealous that, when the pair was practicing in the fields, he made Hyacinthus’ discus swerve back and mortally wound him on the head," (Apollo, greekmythology.com). Rather than letting hades take his lover's soul, he turned Hyancinthus into a flower now known as the hyacinth.
