Pro- Schools Should Not Censor Teachers, Students, or their Materials written by Carlos Rodriguez

Schools around the U.S. cesnor academics topics, books, free speech of students, teachers, as well as real world problems. This is a real problem because teachers and students do not have the freedom to discuss a wide variety of topics in the classroom. Schools should not censor students, teachers, academic materials, or real world problems.

Schools should not censor students because hides students from real issues in the world. Censorship of materials will also keep students from learning information that they can use in the future.

Students across the country were participating in school walkouts to protest the parkland, Florida school shooting. In an article posted on March 9, 2018, titled "Let Them March: Schools Should Not Censor Students" by Kathleen Bartzen Culver & Erica Salkin for education week, says, “..., administrators are seeking to silence student voices with threats of discipline.” When students are silenced it prevents their ideas and opinions from being heard. The fact that teachers are trying to silence a students first amendment right is contradictory to a principle that this country was founded on.

Censorship in schools also makes it immensely harder on teachers to find good materials to teach. In an article posted on October 3, 2016, titled " How Can Teachers and Librarians Navigate Censorship in the Classroom" by Kate Stoltzfus for Education Week , and it says, “ And for K-12 teachers and leaders, they can be especially difficult to navigate—posing a balancing act between open access to information and a broad range of morals concerns and opinions from parents, community members, and school employees, including the teachers and librarians themselves.” The censorship of materials restricts a teacher's abo;oty to teach effectively.

Teachers and students can benefit from school materials not being censored. If teachers were not censored they can engage in a wide variety of topics with their students.

Other people may say that censorship in schools is necessary to provide a disruption free environment. In an article posted on March 16, 2018 by Scott Bomboy, titled “Public school student free speech: A primer”, for constitution center.org says, “The courts have long said that public school officials can regulate or ban student protests they view as disruptive. But not all protest actions can be considered as disruptive by schools, especially individual efforts that are passive in nature...” Students should be able to express free speech as long as it is not disruptive.

A solution would be to not censor the materials that teachers are allowed to teach and classrooms. Students and teachers should be allowed to exercise their first amendment rights as long as they are not disruptive.

In conclusion schools should not censor academic materials, teachers, students, or real world issues.
Teachers and students can both benefit form not being censored.

No Censorship In Schools

There should be no censorship in schools because schools are hiding topics happening in the real world that students should know about. The following cartoon makes the argument of having no censorship in schools. "Schools should not censor students because it hides students from real issues in the world. Censorship of materials will also keep students from learning information that they can use in the future."
This supports the pro argument that schools should not censor materials. In the cartoon the teacher is reading a book about guns and violence to young students. Young kids sitting on the floor around teacher, gun strapped to teacher’s back, NRA book. The words ”NRA PRIMER” A is for assault rifle, B is for bullets, C is for carnage, D is for death. The teacher is reading words from an NRA book while having a gun strapped to her back. The teacher is also talking about a topic that normally isn’t discussed in classrooms. The teacher is talking about real world problems and not censoring herself to her students.

Con- Schools Should Censor Students, Staff, or their Materials. By: Dana Awad

There are many different reasons as to why schools should censor their academic material, students freedom of speech, books, and also their teachers. Countless numbers of casualties and different incidents have happened over the years because there was no censorship.

As stated in the article written by NCAC (National Coalition Against Censorship) on May 9, 2016, speaks about how the First Amendment allows people to speak freely, but with censorship it does not allow that. It states " the classroom is peculiarly the "marketplace of ideas."

There is also a censorship geared toward books saying schools should censor the kinds of books their kids and staff have to read. As stated in the article written by David L. Hudson on September 18, 2017, many schools censor students books because of parents, members of the community, and administrators.

Many people think that there should be no type of censorship in schools for their students and staff there should be censorship because it would not cause as many casualties and depression.

Others might have a different opinion toward the whole topic and think schools should not censor their students and staff. In an article posted on March 9, 2018, titled "Let Them March: Schools Should Not Censor Students" by Kathleen Bartzen Culver & Erica Salkin say " administrators are seeking to silence student voices with threats of discipline." By doing that they silence all the good ideas and discussions the students can have.

The message officials should absorb from this is setting certain rules in schools. Many students and staff have issues at home that need to be talked about but when they do talk about something it might trigger another students mind.

This picture shows and creates the argument of how there needs to be censorship in school. Countless numbers of casualties and different incidents have happened over the years because there was no censorship.
The girl is doing her presentation in a soundproof booth, and her class is sitting down watching her. In a classroom. Soundproof booth, Students sitting down, And teacher talking. Now Suzy will present her report in a soundproof booth.” Suzy is presenting in a soundproof booth, so the students can’t hear her present. The class is watching Suzy present her report in a soundproof booth, so the students aren’t able to hear her. And Suzy is being censored from talking about her report.
