Understand the perspectives and types of research in psychology - 8/30

Types of perspectives and summaries:
**Structuralism:
-people use experiences to recreate feelings, however it is not used anymore because there is no way to test this theory (too much experimental error)
**Gestalt perspective:
-Opposes structuralists perspective because they believe that human perception relates to a whole versus individual parts
**Functionalism
-Functionalists wanted to focus on conscious experiences and believed that there was always some consciousness going one. It no longer exists but helped shaped the behavioral perspective
**Psychodynamic
-Believes that behavior comes from unconscious desires, they believe that personality is developed by ages 5-6 and most desires are sexual. Many of the ideas were criticized and unscientific
**Behaviorism-believed that people act a certain way because of their experiences and also includes classical/operant conditioning. THe most common way to test it is with experiments.
**humanistic
-People are good and are free to choose their own way of life rather than being influenced. Humanists help people realize their inner thoughts
**Biological
-Believes that all psychology is science and the way people think is caused by how the brain functions.
**Cognitive
-mostly based on thoughts, they believe that behavior and reactions come from individual perspective
**Sociocultural
-Deals with how society structure shapes the way a person things, including factors like gender, ethnicity, etc.
**Evolutionary
-Deals with evolution explaining why people behave a certain way. it explains how genes and traits are passed by natural selection cause behaviors.
**Eclectic
-all perspectives combined.
