This rings especially true for online forms/surveys, in which most often there is either no option to choose a mix, or I am relegated to "other". This makes it surprising (in a good way) when forms consider racial inclusivity by making as simple a change as having checkboxes instead of radio buttons, allowing for the selection of multiple races.

However, over the years, every time I had to check a box for my ethnicity, I was forced to pick "white" because the explainer on most forms said that middle eastern people are considered white. This was particularly common on forms for US based organizations. That can't be further from the truth for me (based on my lived experience). Last year, the US government updated ethnic and racial categories on their census and as part of that, they created a new category for "middle eastern" people. Because US led initiatives are so influential across the globe, this changed things in many ways. I can now pick the right ethnicity on these forms.
