The Chinese on Angel Island

While waiting for many more Chinese immigrants to be accepted into the U.S. so I can interview them, I have run into a man named Lim Lee who is waiting for his wife to be accepted into the U.S. I would later get to talk with his wife when she came ashore. She had told me what It was like having to live on the island for such a long time and how many people pass the time by writing poems. She and her husband said their goodbyes to me and I went to interview others who just came ashore. People didn’t speak English well but the ones that could hold a conversation, told me that being an immigrant and having so many of your family be denied to come along with you is very saddening. After interviewing a lot of people, I can tell that the mood on Angel Island is dim and worrisome for most of the immigrants that are coming from China trying to have a better life in the U.S. have to be strong for their family.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire incident

I was on my way to work and heard the sounds of the firetrucks speeding by me, I was struck with a bad feeling after that, but I still walked to work. My boss came in and told me about the fire at Triangle Shirtwaist factory, a few reporters and I all rushed there to report the story. By the time I got there the fire was already out and there was a mess of ashes and saddened people everywhere talking to the police officers and firefighters. The fire started on the 8th floor, apparently someone threw a cigarette in the cloth bin and the cloth caught fire. I was also able to interview a manager of the factory Samual Levine. He said, “they heard the word fire and the women got up and rushed wildly, some went towards the windows and some to the elevator but there was a limit on how many people could use it.” Samuel also said,“The flames came quickly, three girls came rushing in clothes on fire. I tried to help them by splashing water on them but they ran off before I could.” Later, when they were all getting desperate, Samual opened the elevator doors to climb down the wires to escape, as he saw women falling attempting to do what he was doing. As he was climbing down he was struck on the back by a woman falling and he lost his grip and ended up landing on the dead bodies of several women. The city and hopefully the country will look at the tragedy of what happened on this day and make sure to put as many fire safety measures for all workers.

The Muckrakers in our World

Many companies and factories will always choose their benefits over their workers’ benefits especially with child labor benefits. Having our children working instead of going to get an education is appalling because not only many factory workers are paid so little that they can’t support their families, so they have to have their children work just to get by and it is very saddening. John Spargo an immigrant author who wrote a book on the aspects of child labor and the crushing truth about it including the horrorfying sences of young children described as coal breakers would separate rocks, slate and other debris other then coal their faces blackend and there hands coated in layers of coal dust. John Spargo tried to do the job a twelve year old boy was doing and he could only do it for half an hour. These boys do this non-stop for up to ten hours for only 60 cents a day and it is unbelievable that the boys can hold out for so long. They are incredibly strong. John Spargo's book will hopefully open the eyes of our country so that children never have to worry about never getting an education or having to do back-breaking work also to raise the pay for many adult workers who cannot support themselves or their families.
