Before the territory that is today, Uganda, was made into a British protectorate at the end of the 19th century, the region was divided between several closely related Kingdoms.

Uganda, on the equator and surrounded by great lakes, was one of the last parts of Africa to be reached by outsiders. During the 1840s, Arab traders in search of slaves and ivory arrived, soon to be followed by British explorers.

The existence of various African kingdoms (Ankole, Toro and Bunyoro) had a profound influence on Ugandas development during the colonial period. When the scramble of Africa began in the 1880s, Ugandas remote interior region was not immediately in the sights of colonial predators.

When separate spheres of interest were agreed, in 1886, the area of modern Kenya fell to Britain.

Difficulties during the colonization of Uganda

At the time of African colonization, between 1890 and 1926, Europeans were seeking natural goods and economic gain. To the British, the purpose in controlling Uganda was the money to be made from various resources, and Uganda's leader Metusa I was forcefully converted to christianity by British explorers John Speke and Henry Stanley.

This conversion ignited a competition between British Protestants, German Protestants, French Catholics, and the Islamic missionaries. The Protestants and Catholics defeated the Islamic missionaries, and then went on to fight themselves, in which the Protestants achieved victory, creating reinforced ties with the British. It was at that time (1894) Uganda became a British colony. The British treated the Bugandans (Uganda natives) relatively well, but marginalized and upset the northern tribes of Uganda.
