Standards define the skills and knowledge that students must know and obtain throughout their duration at school. These standards allow students progress to be measured and allow for consistency throughout the state in regards to the content being taught. Standards also ensure that students are being taught the content that will benefit them in regards to college, the work force, and life.

Instructional Strategies

Instructional strategies are the methods, techniques, and strategies that teachers use to break down content, deliver the lesson, and teach. The goal of instructional strategies is to engage each individual student in the learning process, making the process fun while delivering the content in a way that the students understand. Instructional strategies can vary from teacher to teacher and from class to class because different strategies may benefit different students while not being effective for others. Examples of instructional strategies consist of inquiry based learning, modeling, differentiated learning, etc....

Assessment

Assessment is a way in which teachers gather and analyze the students work to evaluate where each student is at individually. This information then can be used to track student learning throughout the different lessons to ensure that they are grasping the content or to help them if they need additional help. There are many different forms of assessment which fall under the two categories of formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment is an ongoing evaluation of the students growth, which can involved check points or goals that the student should be reaching throughout the duration of the year. While summative assessment is a final evaluation either at the end of a unit, semester, or year. Throughout class we discussed assessment ideas such as "Five Things", "Think Pair Share", "Exit Tickets," and Tests.

Motivation

Motivation is the driving force behind each students desire to learn and put out effort in life and in regards to school. There are different types of motivation which fall under the two categories of extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is based on external factors such as rewards. Intrinsic motivation is based on ones own desire to do well, a force that comes from within. Motivation directly impacts the effort that a student puts forth and therefore impact their ability to learn. Examples of such would be that students motivation is increased due to an extrinsic motivational factor such as a prize from the prize station.

Technology

Technology is an ever growing industry which is taking over the classroom. Technology is the use of tools digitally and online which can increase the learning experience for many students. Technology consists of the internet which alone provides students with unlimited resources and information. Though technology is a strength many students are tempted to misuse technology to take short cuts and miss out on learning the content. There are also teachers who refuse to grow with this ever changing area and miss out on new advances in regards to teaching their students.

Classroom Management

Classroom management is the way in which the teacher handles and controls the classroom environment at all times. There may be moments of chaos or frustration but a good teacher can handle such moments and turn them into a calm environment. Good classroom management looks like students following set procedures and respecting both the teacher and other students. Poor classroom management would look like students acting on impulse which would result in disrespecting the teacher and other students, wasting the valuable time of those around them. Examples of good classroom management is communicating expectations such as when students can speak, when work must be turned in, how students should treat each other, etc....
