A lot of thought and work goes into designing inquiry-based learning investigations. The brain or mind is social. It is widely agreed that the brain is social in both human and nonhuman primates. Understanding the brain basis of social functioning and social development is crucial to the fostering of social competence inside and outside the classroom. Social functioning plays a role in shaping learning and academic performance (and vice versa), and understanding the neural basis of social behavior can contribute to understanding the origins and process of schooling success and failure. -Stephanie SSAP

Learning is enhanced by challenge. I teach Grade 10 students and I have observed that when they are challenged about a certain activity or task, they are more active and engaged. In science, students learn more and are engaged more when they see the meaning in what they are doing and learning especially when they can apply what they have learned in real-life situations. When students own their learning, the teaching-learning process has a greater impact. - Chris Padlan, CSA Makati

I can attest to the principle of emotions are critical to learning. Students learn best when they are fully invested in the topics. Yes concepts must be taught and in science this is often unappealing in the students, so to combat this, you have to think strategically on how to make the subject matter interesting and this is achievable if you arouse their emotions. I often do this whenever I give real-life examples that is connected to the lesson. I can also make use of the trends in social media where I know majority of my students are familiar with. In the values integration of the subject matter also, for we facilitate both of their morality and cognitive growth. Inquiry based learning is essential to further cater students needs in these evolving times.

Dave John P. Tirona
San Jose Academy

I tend to measure first the student preparedness and emotions for me to have an overview of the possible consequences of their achievement or performance in the subject. Through this, I can employ new concepts and procedures addressing content difficulties that can help my students improve their learning emotions. Inquiry based learning indeed can stimulate and support student’s learning.

Students learn better when they associate a lesson with an emotion they have felt when a particular lesson was taught.

For example, when I was teaching about volcanoes in January 2020, I noticed that the students are very much eager and engaged because all of us have experienced the Taal phreatic eruption. It could have been the first volcanic eruption they have witnessed in their lifetime, and so they have mixed feelings about it. Some were even in the vicinity of the volcano when it happened. They felt fear, some were mesmerized, but I know one thing's for sure. They understood well what volcanoes are all about because they have a first-hand experience of it, and their emotions are very strong.

So, to incorporate IBTL, make sure that the lesson is contextualized. Make your lesson relatable to the students, and they will talk bunch about it. A productive noise, for me, is better than silence in the classroom.

- Alfred Pelenio, UP

1. Emotion is critical to learning. I believe this principle is promoted in our lessons in such a way that when students were able to personally experience the concept being discussed. When we also start our lesson with something surprising or something that they are not aware of that much, it made them remember the concept because of the real life scenarios and applications of the concept presented to them. Inquiry based can be applied in our subject by posing actual scenarios/real life situations that poses a problem to either a small group, community, or environment and by letting them inquire what can they observe and infer which may lead them to determining possible solutions or explanations to the given scenario. It can also be a situation in their own home or community. - Melai Ramos
