Today I've learned about international learning. When you're making a project in global citizenship, you first have to choose a theme, then the skills you would like to give the students and then look at which outlooks you would like. It's a good model to give the work a structure.

I also got some good ideas, that can make you reflect how the conditions are in the world compare to things you take for granted.

And then again, it was all spiced up with new knowledge about the rainforest. Thank you for a nice day.

Session 4 - Global identity - Thomas

My reflections on session 4 are directed towards our independent school's practices, where we can already see elements of internationalization in our students' learning despite a lack of written focus in our curriculum. In discussions with my colleagues, I find that together we can identify academic content in various subject practices and their associated curricula. We are already working on internationalization but need to conduct a specific assessment of our practices.

The actual focus in session 4 was on Global identity and citizenship, an educational focus where we delved into the competency levels for teaching and organization. We distinguish between themes, skills, and outlook. What's interesting here is the differentiation of the processes students need to go through to develop key competencies for global citizenship. A progression from theme to outlook that can strengthen our didactic focus and the development of the school's curriculum.

The following quote represents the core for me in terms of establishing a curriculum for the independent school to ensure that we enable students to develop intercultural competencies: "Identity and belonging encourage students to explore the concept of social identity, the identities they have, and how the groups they belong to inform those identities. In promoting an appreciation and understanding of global cultures, the theme brings an awareness and respect for diversity."

Being a global citizen is becoming increasingly pressing nowadays. Think globally to act locally, in a responsible and sustainable way, becoming aware of our responsibility for our actions and attitudes towards global society. It is important to act for the benefit of others and not just our own. For this to happen, we need to think globally, understand the perspective of others, respect diversity, actively participate in society, not accepting certain social situations. Basically, think about the world as a whole where each person is a fundamental part of global balance.
That is why the role of the teacher is fundamental in the formation of global citizens because they have the ability to influence mentalities, open the way for new forms of civil action, other ways of seing the world,  broaden the horizons and sharpening curiosity.

Today's walk through the rainforest was wonderful! It's wonderful that people are preserving nature and allowing current and future generations to enjoy it. I was awed by the diphenbachias and lianas, the waterfall and the wonderful river. It was also interesting to hear about globalization, because it affects us all. It is good to be not only a citizen of one country, but to feel for the whole world.

Understanding and knowledge are two very important words from todays session. We are obliged to seek knowledge about the circumstances behind the reasons why governments and people act the way they do. We must not fall for the tendency to judge before trying to understand and hopefully it will make sense.

To think globally - we need to act locally. And as a global citizen we have obligations towards people in the whole world.

Since we landed in Guadeloupe we've been listening to "We are the world" from 1985.

At session 4 we have also been talking about the five global themes, skills and outlooks that we need to take into consideration for international learning.

Today, I have learned that thinking globally is about more than just perceiving oneself as a global citizen. It is equally about acting as a global citizen and taking responsibility for the entire world in one's actions. We have gone through the 5 global themes, skills, and outlooks today, and each of us has chosen which one to work on next Tuesday. Working with these concepts has provided our group with a shared language on how to develop our students into global citizens, and I look forward to bringing it back to the school and spreading this common language to the entire staff group.

Our work took place in nature, specifically the rainforest, and it was a fantastic experience. Once again, it confirms to me that learning processes occur everywhere, and having a classroom with a door to the whole world is the right path to take.

Global citizenship is a concept that was brought to us by globalization and by the digital possibilities that can connect the whole globe. This way, in a world that is totally connected and in which we know everything that goes on around the globe in a matter of seconds, we also need to start and think of what surrounds us.

The forest we visited today is a real example of that. If it is not preserved, the natural balance will be lost, plants and animals may die and the oxygen production can be reduced. This lack of equilibrium will affect one way or another not only the people around but also the entire world. As this example, many other could be provided, but what we do need to think about is that as global citizens we are also human beings who need to respect the environment, be socially responsible, globally competent, and engage civically in global causes.

Mother nature asks for respect from every human being!

Education can help in this fight if the students learn to respect the natural habitats and how to be a real global citizen. International learning and the intercultural competence are two good allies for that. Students need to experience and learn about the world and its problems and not be encaged in a classroom without seeing what is going on around them.

The key idea of the day is that we all global citizens, trying to understand others and the links between us for ‘common good’. We should respect and value the world diversity, understand how the world works economically, culturally, socially, politically and environmentally. Moreover, it’s a must for us as teachers, to influence our students’ mindsets to make the world a more sustainable place for future generations.
