A Teachers Guide to exploring Goldilocks and the Three Bears in Year 1

This resource provides a structured plan, consisting of three lessons with detailed resources, to teach Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and uses a variety of drama and storytelling strategies to support children's literacy development. This resource seeks to achieve a range of reading comprehension and spoken language aspects of the English curriculum and promotes the value of using drama and story. In this course of lessons, children will engage in storytelling led by the teacher, they will explore the repetition, patterns and structure of the story and predict what will happen. Children will also explore the character of Goldilocks in detail and will take part in a court hearing as the Jury for Goldilocks, deciding whether Goldilocks is guilty or not guilty in going into the Three Bears house and the events that followed. Finally, children will also be part of a chat show where they interview Goldilocks, as well as engaging with drama strategies such as freeze frames, being in a role, retelling a story, ordering a story structure and performing to others; while being peer assessed.

What is on this page? - This page consists of all of the resources needed to teach the corresponding lesson plans. The page has been organised by colour; Blue posts are lesson plans; Pink posts are resources; Green posts are additional/future guidance and yellow posts are information on the overall resource.
How do I use the resources? - Attached to the lesson plans are the resources needed for the lesson (these are also stated in the lesson plan). Each lesson has a variety of different resources to support children's learning, for example, visual and audio, and there is also detailed lesson plans on how to use each resource and when.
Are the lessons inclusive? - The lessons in this course of work have considered inclusive practice and all of the resources are either visual or audio to support children with additional needs. Similarly, the drama activities can be further adapted to support individual needs. In the second lesson when children have to write a question they should first think of their question and say it verbally before writing it to support their own understanding, the teacher should also model a variety of the activities to support learning. Finally, the tasks consist of a range of pair work, group work, whole class work and individual tasks.
