She founded the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919 and gave several speeches throughout her lifetime, including one in 1913 commemorating the building of the Peace Palace and one in 1915 regarding the first World War. When John entered Chicago, a growing City that was exploding with immigrants, many whom were illiterate, he saw how all the colleges were run by and in the name of rich people. During this time he became more of a populist and a socialist and decided that the school system would need to change for the people.

He became a teacher and and learned from both John Dewey and Ella Flagg Young. Hine was the nature study and geography educator at the Ethical Culture School in New York.
