#1 Living overseas for 9 years

I made friends for life when I lived in Switzerland and the Netherlands (from 2008-2017), and I met people from all over the world. I was also fortunate enough to have opportunities to travel to different countries. Switzerland is where I started being a musician, and picking up the cello in the Netherlands helped shape who I am today. If I hadn't began playing cello in 5th grade, I probably wouldn't be in the Pasadena Youth Philharmonic now. The song "Fantasy-Overture 'Romeo and Juliette'" by Tchaikovsky represents me living overseas for a long time because the song has many different parts to it: ups and downs, fast and exciting parts, and slow and sad parts. Living so far away for so long had it's ups and downs, too. It was exciting to be there, but sad because my extended family was in the US. "Romeo and Juliette" is also a long song, and I was away from the US for a long time, too.

#2 Reading "Harry Potter"

I began reading "Harry Potter" in 4th or 5th grade and it was one of my highlights from Middle School. Reading it helped me to become a faster reader and I got a lot better at reading between the lines from it. I didn't choose "Hedwig's Theme" by John Williams because it's a "Harry Potter" song, I chose it because it has so many emotions in it: suspicion, mystery, rising action, power, and so many more emotions that I felt while reading "Harry Potter". Feeling these emotions helped me to become a nicer person in a way, and more understanding and open-minded. I probably wouldn't think the way I do now if it wasn't for "Harry Potter".

This was definitely one of my favorite thing I've ever done in my life. I wanted to be on Broadway for a while now, but seeing "Hamilton" about a month ago really inspired me more to pursue that dream. The show and actors were so amazing, and I want to be a part of that someday. "Hall Of Fame" by will.i.am. represents going to "Hamilton" to me because being at "Hamilton" made me feel this sense of longing, but joyful longing. Like, "I want to be there someday. I'm going to be there someday." I think "Hall Of Fame" portrays that same feeling.

#4 Having Ms. Christopher as my 8th grade English teacher

Ms. Christopher taught me about speculative fiction, what it means, and how it can affect every individual and the whole world. I could always talk to her about serious things AND light-hearted things. I admired that she could also talk to her students about what was going on in her life and how she would deal with it. If it weren't for her, I don't think I would be as close to some of my friends as I am now, too, because my friends and I always love talking about Ms. C's class. Ms. Christopher is so significant in the shaping of me. "Firework" by Katy Perry represents having Ms. Christopher as my 8th grade English teacher because she helped me come out of my shell a little bit and that let out a spark in me that I didn't know was there before. It turned out I was pretty good at analyzing things that make you think about the world and its problems (ex. global warming, sameness, peace, etc.). Knowing this makes me want to help the world even more than I am now. She also helped me to want to be more compassionate with people. I will never forget the amazing times my friends and I had with her!

In 5th grade, I decided to audition for the Middle School musical on the day of auditions. I tried calling my mom using the choir teacher's classroom phone and my mom didn't answer, so I called her later and told her I was going to audition. It was a good thing that I did, because I had the time of my life being in "H.M.S. Pinafore". I made so many amazing memories and met so many amazing people while being a part of this musical. I think I found one of my callings there, too. I found that I love to sing and act, so I decided I wanted to be an actress/singer when I'm older. I did the musicals for all four years of Middle School and they make me who I am. I don't know who I'd be without them. Aly & Aj's "Walking On Sunshine" represents how I felt in "H.M.S. Pinafore" because being in that show lit up my life and it felt like I was "walking on sunshine!" The vibe of my school's cast of the show made me feel so happy and excited to be part of something like that.
