When I am out on placement I will be sure to have an evaluation copy close at hand both during the lesson and after. Students are given a worksheet, they try their best ti fill it in. After a period of time students stop, crunch their paper and throw it into a basket, different students then retrieve the pieces of paper and they try to fill in any blanks on the sheet. This is collaborative learning which engages students.
Also another technique mentioned was "Group Roles", I thought this was a fantastic idea and a great way to engage students. We learned IBL has numerous advantages in regards  student learning..
Students are able to retain information more through this practice as they are the ones leading their own learning while the teacher acts as a facilitator.
We went through the thought process of the IBL network where students first
-Wonder then
-Investigate
-Record
-Discover
-Think
-Try and most importantly
-Reflect
We learned that there are numerous ways to incorporate IBL into the lesson including guided worksheets, research projects, unknown investigations and higher order thinking Q's.
