Did you observe someone or did a colleague observe you? What did you learn from the experience? Is there anything you will change as a result of the observation?

I had a colleague watch my teaching to look for the following: providing opportunities for student engagement through multiple modalities, seeking out and encouraging students' thoughts and points of view, and using high five reading strategies to think critically. Things that I will consider after my feedback were inviting more students to participate in discussions through using the numbered heads together strategy or learning lineup.

I had a colleague observe me to look for my ObserveMe goals. My colleague shared positive feedback about the use of flexible seating and how all students were engaged, writing, and interested in what we were doing. She gave a couple suggestions:
1. I could modify sharing slightly to get students up and moving.
2. I had a shared document (1 per table) for students to read individually. I could send the article via Google Classroom as well as having it as a printed document per group to give students an option to read it either way.
3. She shared a great idea for my next round of Write Aways (bell ringers.) I'm excited to implement this later this year!

I invited staff to visit my classroom to observe how flexible seating looks and how students use it to support themselves to be better students and achieve a higher standard of creativity and productivity. I believe this is a big piece of student perspective because having some control (choice) in their environment goes a long way in making them proud of their learning community. When they are proud of it, they want to do better.

I invited teachers in to observe students working through measurement review by completing 16 different measurements. My goal was for students to connect to the real-world of measurement and how it is a life-skill, not just something that they "have" to do because the teacher says so. Students had a variety of items at their tables and four different graduated cylinders set up around the counters. Students completed the task in any order they chose to allow movement and choice. Thanks to those who visited and gave me positive feedback on my lesson.

It was AMAZING. My memories of PE class are horrible, I hated it and felt completely inadequate. Your class allowed kids to be themselves, NO ONE looked uncomfortable, no one was standing against the wall, they were all engaged and smiling. AND you made it relevant. The number of things you did blows my mind- peer teaching, self-awareness, friendly competition, regard for student perspective- all while moving! Thank you for opening your doors to us. It’s great to see that a class that can intimidate many doesn’t have to be that way.“

“Thank you for opening your classroom for Instructional Rounds! I loved how you had the kids find partners and tell the other person something they were trying to improve on. That was masterful!”

I learned about the #ObserveMe movement from my instructional coach. When we were sitting down to chat about goals for the year, she asked if I would be willing to post my goals on my door and be open to having staff observe. Having goals posted also informs the students that I have a growth mindset and we are learning together and that we are always learning no matter our age. Since many staff have growth mindset goals, it is an effective way for us to give feedback in order to improve our practices.

I saw Robert Kaplinky's blog right before school started. I thought it was a great idea to have teachers open up their classrooms to invite staff in to not only share goals but to get feedback! I casually mentioned the concept to a few teachers before school started and they seemed enthusiastic about the idea. Before the first couple weeks of school were underway, we had a handful of staff participating in the #ObserveMe movement. Visitors have mentioned how open the school feels and that the #ObserveMe signs highlight the fact that staff are open to learning and showing the students they are continually growing too. Next year, I would like to focus on this more by having an #ObserveMe week to invite more staff to provide feedback to others.
