Richard Speck had always told police that he didn’t remember what happened the night of the murders; However, a video of Speck talking about the murders to another inmate surfaced in May 1996, and it was clear that Speck had actually remembered a lot of details from the night. After all those years, you might think he had time to develop some remorse but when the inmate in the video asked Speck how he felt after killing the nurses, he responded with, “Like I always felt; have no feeling. If you’re asking if I felt sorry, no” (Harrington).

Harrington, Adam. “Killer Richard Speck Is Shown Confessing, Having a Ball on Video in 1996 CBS Chicago Reports.” CBS News, 30 Aug. 2024, www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/killer-richard-speck-confessing-video-1996-report.

Speck was born into a tumultuous low-income family while being 1 of 8 kids. He spent most of his youth growing up in Dallas, Texas where he regularly had run-ins with law enforcement due to his excessive drinking and repetition of public disturbances. Speck first lived in Texas and then moved in with his sister while continuing to add lines to his rap sheet. Richard was trying to find work and would check in at the National Maritime Union hiring hall in hopes of receiving an assignment to a vessel. After a few days of not being assigned anything, Speck began his murderous rampage by sexually assaulting and robbing Ella Mae Hooper, a local woman he met at a bar.

Chm_Admin. “The First Mass Murderer: Richard Speck in Chicago - Chicago History Museum.” Chicago History Museum, 31 May 2024, www.chicagohistory.org/first-mass-murderer-richard-speck/#:~:text=The%20seventh%20of%20eight%20children,and%20penchant%20for%20public%20disturbances.

Specks father died when he was only 6. His mother remarried and Speck suffered abuse from his step father. The step fathers bad influence caused Specks childhood to be marked by juvenile delinquency and alcohol abuse. Speck had a daughter with his 15 year old wife Shirley Malone named, Bobby Lynn. For a short time was a carpenter. Was sentenced to death in prison after killing 8 nurses and during prison bragged about how much strength it takes to strangle someone the way he did with the nurses. Speck was never charged with the murders prior to the south Chicago town house massacre of 8 student nurses. Died of a heart attack in 1991 at age 49.

Biography.com Editors. “Richard Speck Biography.”The biography.com website, A&E television networks, December 1 2021, https://www.biography.com/crime-figure/richard-speck. When the police found Linda Salee’s body in the river they found her tied up to a car part. It wasn’t a common knot the police said it was very “unusual”.

Jerry Brudos was born Jan. 31, 1937, in South Dakota. His family moved around a lot and he was the youngest of 2 boys. Around age 22, Brudos got married and moved to Portland Oregon. His fetishes with women’s footwear still continued to grow and he ended up murdering 4 women because of it. When Brudos got caught, it was because he thought he was going on a date with a woman but when he got there, the police were already there waiting to arrest him. The police were able to obtain a search warrant for his house where they found a bunch of evidence including photos of the victims. During his interrogation, he admitted to the four murders as well as other assaults and attempted kidnappings.

Biography.com Editors. “Jerome Brudos - Victims, Family & Facts.” Biography, 16 June 2020, www.biography.com/crime/jerome-brudos.

‌

He was then later questioned by police on the whereabouts of four missing females as the ship was near where the victims went missing.
