Vaqueros herded cattle in Mexico and brought longhorn cattle north to what is now Texas in the 1860s, where the cattle were left to roam free. Vaqueros developed the system of letting cattle graze on the open range and then herding and branding the cattle to bring them to ranches.</div>]]></description>
