Is Computer Applications Technology beneficial or not?

Has it ever crossed your mind?
Computer Applications Technology (CAT) is a new subject that was introduced in 2006 at a grade 10 level that equips learners with knowledge, skills, qualities and attitudes to create, design and communicate information in different formats. It is also known as the study of integrated components of a computer system and the practical techniques for their efficient use and applications to solve everyday problems as stated in the CAT CAPS documents.

Let’s take the time to think about learners who had/has CAT as a subject at school level and those who did not.
From my perspective, I think that every child needs CAT or at least a little bit of computer literacy in their lives. We are overflowing with technology taking over our daily tasks, saving us time and literally taking over our lives… NOW just imagine a robot taking over your life and yes I mean a robot. A REAL ROBOT! The one that they are replacing our people with at call centres. Just because we lack experience? We are forced in a world where our papers are becoming our computer screens and our tablets our new best friends. Have you noticed this? What is one of the MAIN requirements in almost every job opportunity? Computer literacy, computer literacy, computer literacy! So, back to our Learners. A Learner with CAT on a high school level, will have better technological skills and requirements. This learner will also be more skillful when it comes to assignments and it will not only help in the subject of CAT but in the other subjects as well, whereas the person who doesn’t do CAT will have to get help and if they do find a job where computer literacy is required they will have to pay extra for a computer course or training. This might also lead to the person not even qualifying for the job.

Every person will need to use a computer in their lifetime. The evolution of technology is among us. It is inevitable.

Personally, I feel like everyone student especially tertiary level students should be introduced to CAT. It exposes you to a different technological world. I was always abit computer illiterate and I do regret not choosing CAT as a major. In present days, computer skills are required for majority of the job available.

I couldn't agree more with this post! It's nothing but the truth I feel that the curriculum should integrate computers within the foundation phase of the schooling system that way the learner will be more skillful in a digital and technological way and also prepare them for the future out there in the real world when being in a working environment because computers and technology is literally part of our everyday life.
