Interviews!

Structured - The researcher goes in with pre-determined questions with an idea of the sort of answers they want

Semi-Structured - The researcher has some pre-determined questions in mind but during the interview process more
questions may be asked relating to the answers given by the interviewee to elaborate and obtain more detailed answers.

Unstructured - This is where the researcher doesn't have any questions ready prepared and tends to go with the flow of
the interview to create a more natural conversation.

Open Questions - These give a more detailed answer producing qualitative data. Open questions are ideal for generating
a wider variety of responses. For example; Why did you choose to take sociology at AS Level?

Closed Questions- These usually give options for the participants to tick rather than giving a more detailed answer.
They can produce both quantitative and qualitative data. They are more generaliseable and can be compared and analysed clearly presented.
These questions mainly give quantitative data meaning positivists will use them. an example of a positivist would be

Durkheim and his study on suicide.

If a sociologist wants to carry out an experiment there are many things they must consider like practical issues. These are things that may get in the way of an experiment. The experiment may have to change and
develop to suit these practical issues.

A researcher must consider the impact of the experiment on their lives. The six ethics are:

Consent,

Deception

Privacy

Confidentiality

Protection

Legality.

questionnaires are not always reliable as some of the participants are not completely honest. questionnaires comes under primary data. you have got open and closed questionnaires, with the closed questionnaires they are reliable and are used by the positivist. open questionnaires are valid and are used by interactionalist. with the questionnaires the participant they stay anonymous and normally when the questionnaires are carried you don't ask for the participant to fill their personal information in. The participant stays safe and they can withdraw from filling in the questionnaire if they wanted to. you would ask the participant to give consent if you are going to use the questionnaire for any other purpose.
