The Missouri Compromise was an agreement as Missouri was coming into statehood. The Louisiana land had been recently been bought and the people of Missouri wanted to practice slavery. This set up an imbalance in the system. However, Henry Clay proposed a system where the people in Missouri and Maine could practice slavery but the people (in the Louisiana purchase) above the line in the picture cannot.
_________________________________
This system was flawed, it did keep the peace, for a moment. With the pressing nature of slavery to the people, the people didn't like it because it was bringing slavery to the states and it set laws concerning slavery as well. This system would not last.
_________________________________
https://www.history.com/topics/abolitionist-movement/missouri-compromise#:~:text=In%201820%2C%20amid%20growing%20sectional,of%20the%2036%C2%BA%2030'%20parallel.

This act repelled against the Missouri Compromise on May 30 1854 this act was an agreement to make new territories, this was followed by the battle called bleeding Kansas this 'in turn led to a political battle as many people wanted it to be a slave and many people wanted it to be a anti-slave state. This led to political turmoil but was eventually concluded with the vote.
Stephen Douglas needed this act because of the railroad he was building and the problem is had with slavery. This act then made it so that he could build the railroad over the uncharted area in Nebraska which he couldn't because of the slave line.
https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/minute/Kansas_Nebraska_Act.htm#:~:text=It%20became%20law%20on%20May,territories%20to%20sway%20the%20vote.

Bleeding Kansas was a battle between the slave-likers and the slaver-haters. They were fighting this because of the Kansas Nebraska act which could make/break slavery and could change the United Sates forever.
If the act wasn't reapleded I do not think that there would be such a fight like this. The system would last for long for sure but the fighting wouldn't be as terrible.
